I’m aware that I had a seriously forgetful brain yesterday. I forgot to post my weekly Wednesday #WriteFromHome and I also forgot to attend an English class on zoom. I blame my energy in finishing Pride and Prejudice, which I got so invested in, I practically forgot everything else.
So! Without wasting anymore time in thinking about Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, this weeks Writing Workshop was held by Vicky Forster on the theme of place. Catch the link below:
I really enjoyed the process of this workshop and especially the emphasis on our feelings of lockdown. People are always telling you to ‘write what you know’ and we all have our experiences now of being isolated and forced for our busy lives to come to a halt.
My poem, titled ‘Anything Goes’ is obviously a reference to the musical, but probably the one most constant thing that happened before, during and after lockdown, but for such different reasons. I hope you enjoy it!
It’s late in the morning and the stars are sleeping But the drinks are pouring and the conversations are flowing We sit face to face tucking into second breakfast anything goes. We laugh till our bellies are sore It’s dusk and the stars are busy sending signals in the sky But the drinks have frozen and the silence is deafening We sit screen to screen not sure if it’s breakfast or tea time anything goes. The living room a substitute for the laughing bar It’s early morning and the stars are still partying But the drinks won’t stop flowing and rowdiness is encouraged We dance side by side devouring a guilty kebab anything goes. Laughter is heard till the sun dawns
