Killing Eve: Season 3

For the last few years Killing Eve has quickly become one of my favourite shows of all time. It subverted expectations of female assassins and detectives, it was glamorous and humorous too. But season three hit a stalemate and I don’t know if it can ever recover it’s former glory.

Jodie Comer as the fabulous ‘Villanelle’ and Sandra Oh as the titular character ‘Eve’ had a brilliant connection. They were like magnets to each other and the brooding sexual tension was so gripping. I loved all of Villanelle’s outrageous outfits and her even more outrageous methods to murder someone. I was completely hooked, and with Phoebe Waller Bridge as one of the writers, she just oozed comic genius.

The first two seasons were fantastic. For all the above reasons, including Eve’s husband, Nikos, who’s firm grip on reality added that extra dimension to the almost psychedelic quality that the whole show has and we all loved Kenny as Eve’s trustee.

This is where season 3 lost its star quality. The writing and the episodes were disjointed, Nikos and Kenny were disposed of and even Eve suffered as she didn’t even appear in one of the episodes. The problem with a good show and an exciting antagonist led to the writers falling astray, focusing on Villanelle more than her and Eve’s relationship. Their constant push and pull relationship is what made the drama.

The dramatic ending of season 2 was barely even mentioned or built upon, and Eve fell under a useless trap where she was running around everywhere with absolutely no purpose at all.

SPOILER ALERT:

Kenny’s death seemed at the start to be the main driving force of the plot, but again this was unsolved and quite frankly, I’m confused as to why this storyline wasn’t explored further as it could have been a real character development for Eve to figure out how it happened on her own.

The addition of Dasha, Villanelle’s family and Gemma Whelan’s character barely made up for the gaping holes in the plot. I wish Gemma’s character was never introduced as Carolyn remained a closed book and she was a damp cloth. Sorry. (I love Gemma, but not in this)

Overall, I still enjoyed the drama of the season, but it just felt disjointed and didn’t live up to my high expectations of the latter series.

What were your thoughts on Season 3?
